Forgiveness is a process of healing that takes time and goes through many stages. We are all hurt as we journey through this life. Sometimes we are able to let go of the hurts, no matter how severe and at other times we hold on to them and let them blot out the joy and beauty of other life experiences. To continue carrying hurts is to choose to continue to hurt. In the long-term, the one I harm most by not forgiving is myself. To hold on to a hurt or grudge saps my psychological and spiritual energy, paving the way for negativity, cynicism, passive aggressiveness and spiritual boredom. Forgiveness is a gradual realization that I cannot control another.

This important topic of healing and forgiveness will be explored in a retreat format where prayer, input, time for reflection and dialogue will be experienced. Lent invites us to pause and take stock of where we are in our spiritual life. It is a wonderful time to ask god to "take away our stony hearts and give us hearts of flesh instead" (Ezek. 36:26), especially when we sense within ourselves an inclination to hold on to the hurt and pain. We need God's help in the process of forgiveness.

Facilitator: Sister Carol Ann Spencer, O.P. is a teacher, spiritual director and Coordinator of the Wellstreams Training program for Spiritual Direction. She holds degrees in Theology, Pastoral Ministry and a Certificate in Spirituality from The Institute for Spiritual Leadership.

Through images, experiences and personal reflection we will come to understand how intimately connected we are to the very origins of the Universe. We will consider our spiritual growth and our spiritual directions ministry in the context of the Universe Story: the "Great Work" spoken of by Thomas Berry and others. The explosion of knowledge in today's world challenges us to expand our consciousness about who are, and who we are in relation to God.

Facilitators: Marguerite Chandler and Joan Supel are both Dominican Sisters of Peace.
